DEITY by Jennifer L. Armentrout Blog Tour Stop!!! Review + Alex Interview + Giveaways!

Review:

Rating: A+
Release Date: 11/6/12
Synopsis from goodreads.com:
Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

My thoughts on the book:
Deity is action-packed and full of romance, intrigue, and suspense. I could not put this book down, and I was up until 3am reading it when I had to wake up at the crack of dawn the next day and drive 10 hours. Not a good combination. However, this book was definitely worth the sacrifice. Alex grows a ton as a character, the book has plenty of Aiden and Seth, so no matter which team you're on, you'll be happy. Also, there are some pretty amazing surprises. You will not be disappointed with this installment of the Covenant series, but you will be begging for the next book as soon as you finish this one. It's just that good.

Alex's character growth was amazing to me. She started trying to think instead of just running head first into a bunch of stupid, and she also became more selfless. A lot of that was Aiden's influence. He kept an eye on her quite a bit, but she made some good decisions for herself. She spent a lot of this novel extremely terrified of her Awakening, and I can't blame her. She still tried to do what was best for everyone, though.

The relationships between Aiden and Alex and Seth and Alex got a lot more complicated in this novel. I have also switched from team Seth to team Aiden. I'm not going to tell you why, but Aiden really won me over this time. I also like Marcus better now that I got to see a little more of his personality.

The plot was amazingly captivating, and action and suspense were nonstop. I could not have put this book down, even if I'd wanted to! So many people are out to get Alex that it's impossible to tell who is on her side and who wants her dead. Many of the characters aren't who we thought they were, and there are a lot of surprises. There are also a lot of attempts on Alex's life. Additionally, the pacing was perfect. All of that makes for a quick and enthralling read.

My only complaint with this book is that it ends on a cliffhanger. I want the next installment now, haha. I'm not very patient, so the wait is already killing me. I'm in for a rough road before Apollyon is released.

Overall, I'd recommend this book (and series) to anyone. Jennifer L. Armentrout is one of my favorite authors, and Deity does not disappoint. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Interview with Alex:

Amber: Hi Alex, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to be here today! What are you top favorite things about Seth?
Alex: My top favorite things about Seth? I can tell you my fav three. Ah, okay. I'd have to go with his face as being one, because he's really pretty to look at. His sense of humor and his strength.
Amber: What are your least favorite things about him?
Alex: My three least favorite things have to be his: attitude, arrogance, and his strength. Yeah, I know I listed his strength as something I liked, but I also hate it because he can usually kick my butt, and that sucks.
Amber: And Aiden? Top and least favorite things?
What I like about Aiden is his loyalty, inner strength, and of course, he's really great to stare at. I also like how clear minded he can be. Biggest dislike? His stubbornness.
Amber: What do you like most about being an Apollyon?
Alex: I get to control the fifth element. That is pretty cool.
Amber: What is your biggest regret?
Alex: I have more than one big regret.
Amber: Do you ever wish that you were a full-blood?
Alex: I used to, when I was little, but not so much now.
Amber: If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have three things with you, what would you pick?
Alex: Cell phone. Laptop. Endless energy supply
Amber: What song reminds you of Aiden?
Alex: Some Devil by Dave Matthews
Amber: What song reminds you of Seth?
Alex: No Light. No Light by Florence and the Machines
Amber: What's your favorite color?
Alex: I think blue is a pretty color.

Cats or dogs?
Both
Coffee or tea?
SWEET Tea
Books or movies?
movies
Hot or cold?
somewhere in between
Aiden or Seth?
I think you guys know the answer to that.

Well yea, that one is pretty obvious. Thanks for the great interview, Alex!

I already had the e-copy of this, but I wanted to add it to my shelf collection, too!
Synopsis:
Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

THE EVOLUTION OF MARA DYER by Michelle Hodkin

The Evolution of Mara Dyer
Michelle Hodkin

Rating: A+
Synopsis:
Mara Dyer once believed she could run from her past.

She can’t.

She used to think her problems were all in her head.

They aren’t.

She couldn’t imagine that after everything she’s been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets.

She’s wrong.

In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly. What will become of Mara Dyer next?

My thoughts on the book:
The Evolution of Mara Dyer was one of the best books I've read all year. The ARC has been sitting on my Kindle for awhile, waiting to be read, but between midterms, the GRE, and graduate school applications, I haven't had time to read it. I was missing out, but this book was definitely worth the wait. As most of you know, I wasn't a huge fan of the firs Mara Dyer book, but this novel was much better than the first. This is one story you do not want to miss. I'd recommend The Evolution of Mara Dyer to both fans of the first book and to people like me, who weren't completely sold on the first installment.

Mara has always been a fascinating character, but she really came into her own in this novel. I felt like I got to know her much better, and she grew a lot as a character. I now respect her and feel that she does the best she can with what she has to work with. She's not a narrator that's easily trusted, but that makes the novel that much more interesting. I really enjoyed seeing things from her point of view this time around. Noah completely won me over in this book. I absolutely adore him! He's tortured, but not angsty. He's strong and intelligent, and he went to great lengths for Mara. He's just a terrific hero.

We also got to know the supporting characters a little bit better this time around, but I still would have liked to learn more about Jamie. He's incredibly interesting. Also, I enjoyed getting to know Daniel better. I would have liked to have seen more of Joseph, but maybe we'll get that in the next novel. The characters seemed, for the most part, well-developed and realistic.

The plot was a bit confusing and had a million twists and turns that kept me guessing. Instead of feeling frustrated and lost, like I did with the first Mara Dyer book, I felt intrigued. I couldn't put this book down! I'm not sure if Hodkin changed how she wrote things or if I have just changed as a reader. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed the non-stop mystery/action/suspense. It ended on another cliffhanger, which I hate, but that's okay. I don't feel like I read this entire book without a purpose. The story moved forward, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who has read the first Mara Dyer book. If you haven't read the first one, then you'll be lost when you pick this one up. So I suggest everyone go out and buy the first and/or second installment(s) and enter this disturbing world. You won't be sorry.

Isn't it gorgeous?! Here is some info about the sequel to Sweet Evil!

Publication Date:  April 30, 2013 from HarperTeen

Author Bio:
Wendy Higgins was born in Alaska, grew up an Army brat, and lived all over the United States before settling in the Washington, DC area. She attended George Mason University for her undergrad degree in creative writing, and Radford University for her masters in curriculum and instruction. She now lives in Northern Virginia with her husband, daughter, and son. Sweet Peril is her second novel.

Book Blurb:
Anna Whitt, daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a claim. She’d been naive about a lot of things. Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

CONJURE by Lea Nolan

Conjure
Lea Nolan

Rating: B
Release Date: 10/16/12
Synopsis:
Be careful what you search for...

Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry--hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma’s ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.

When a strange girl appears, bent on revenge; demon dogs become a threat; and Jack turns into a walking skeleton; Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before summer—and her friends--are lost forever.

My thoughts on the book:
Conjure is a unique read that you won't want to miss. I'll admit the characters are a bit young for my tastes, but the leading character was not annoying. I still enjoyed this book immensely. The characters were well-developed and progressed along with the story, the plot was intriguing, and the pacing was perfect. This book will suck you in.

Emma was a terrific leading character. The book was told from first person POV, and I never got tired of hearing from Emma. She wa brave and selfless and everything a leading lady should be. I really enjoyed watching her grow over the course of the novel. Her twin Jack, however, was a jerk. I really didn't like him very much. He was extremely bratty and what I was afraid Emma would be like (with them both being 14). While Emma pleasantly surprised me, Jack pretty much fit the bill of what I expected. Luckily the book wasn't told from his POV. Cooper was a bit of a goody goody, if you ask me, but he was a decent guy. His "goodness" just got on my nerves. I know he will appeal to a lot of readers, though. The other two supporting characters, Maggie and Miss Delia, were also intriguing, and I enjoyed reading about them.

The plot was unique, and I liked the gritty details Nolan included about the Voodoo religion. I was kept guessing throughout the story, and I never got bored. The pacing was perfect, and the ending left me wanting more. There was action, adventure, and secret love. What else could a person want?

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something new in the YA genre, but doesn't mind younger leading characters. I'd say most YA readers will enjoy this one.

ANGEL'S INK by Jocelynn Drake

Angel's Ink
Jocelynn Drake

Rating: C-
Release Date: 10/16/12
Synopsis:
Buyer beware . . .

Looking for a tattoo—and maybe a little something extra: a burst of good luck, a dollop of true love, or even a hex on an ex? Head to the quiet and mysterious Gage, the best skin artist in town. Using unique potions—a blend of extraordinary ingredients and special inks—to etch the right symbol, he can fulfill any heart's desire. But in a place like Low Town, where elves, faeries, trolls, werewolves, and vampires happily walk among humanity, everything has its price.

No one knows that better than Gage. Turning his back on his own kind, he left the magical Ivory Tower where cruel witches and warlocks rule, a decision that cost him the right to practice magic. And if he disobeys, his punishment—execution—will be swift.

Though he's tried to fly under the radar, Gage can't hide from powerful warlocks who want him dead—or the secrets of his own past. But with the help of his friends, Trixie, a gorgeous elf who hides her true identity, and a hulking troll named Bronx, Gage might just make it through this enchanted world alive.

My thoughts on the book:
I'll be honest, I had high hopes for this novel. In some ways, Angel's Ink lived up to those expectations, and in other ways, I was disappointed. The character development was all right, but the growth was non-existent. The plot made sense, but there were actually too many problems. The pacing was slow, and the ending wasn't anything to write home about. I'll read the next in the series, but I'll check it out from my library first.

Gage was an interesting character on the surface, but he's apparently the dumbest man on earth. I didn't understand why he did a lot of the things he did. His idiotic actions seemed to be for the sole purpose of pushing the plot forward. The fact that he'd survived for two years on his own prior to this book would make one think that he's intelligent. Well, his actions in the book counteract that. I didn't know which part to believe.

I loved Trixie in the novella about her, but she was boring and flat in this novel. She's extremely passive and almost weak. I just wasn't her biggest fan. She bored me quickly. Bronx was kind of absent for a lot of the novel, and when he was around he didn't have much of a personality. *yawn* My favorite character was Sofie, the witch turned cat. She was at least interesting. Oh! And Gideon! I loved him. I hope to learn more about him as the series progresses.

The villains were a bit cheesy, and the other secondary characters didn't offer much to the story. The plot, as I said above, had so many problems that it took away from the suspense felt when a new one occurred. By the 900th one, I was just like, "meh whatever." I didn't care. By the 60% mark, I was ready to just wrap this shit up and move on. Things just dragged out way too long. I think if Gage had been less stupid and if 900 problems weren't introduced for no reason that I can think of, then the book would have been much more enjoyable. OR if the characters had grown as a result of the problems, then I could have understood their presence. As it stands, though, I do not get why they were there.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to people who love urban fantasy novels. You may very well love it! I, however, only had lukewarm feelings for Angel's Ink.

DESTROY ME by Tahereh Mafi

Destroy Me
Tahereh Mafi

Rating: A+
Synopsis:
Perfect for the fans of Shatter Me who are desperately awaiting the release of Unravel Me, this novella-length digital original will bridge the gap between these two novels from the perspective of the villain we all love to hate, Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

In Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me, Juliette escaped from The Reestablishment by seducing Warner—and then putting a bullet in his shoulder. But as she’ll learn in Destroy Me, Warner is not that easy to get rid of. . .

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

Set after Shatter Me and before its forthcoming sequel, Unravel Me, Destroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

My thoughts on the book:
When Tahereh Mafi claimed that this book would make readers love Warren, I thought she was full of shit. Seriously. I mean I love Mafi. She's one of my favorite authors and wrote one of my all-time favorite books, but I just couldn't believe that I could possibly love Warren. I literally despised him in Shatter Me. I thought he was one twisted mofo. So imagine my surprise when I actually started to feel bad for the guy.

Destroy Me allowed me to get inside Warren's head and see why he's so creepy and awful. It surprised me that I was actually able to relate to him. Turns out he's not as bad as he seems. I know it's hard to believe, but it's true. There was a part at the end that just stole my heart. I'm still not team Warren, mind you, but if Adam does something jerky, then I will be.

The plot obviously deals with Warren trying to find Juliette, and it's intense in a different way than most books. Basically it's like watching a train wreck and not being able to turn away. Warren's mind seems to be breaking, and it was a bit disconcerting to witness it firsthand. Mafi, of course, did a terrific job of putting the reader inside of Warren's head, and he has his own very unique voice.

Now that I've read Destroy Me, I extra, super can't wait until Unravel Me is out. Well done, Tahereh.

ALL YOU NEVER WANTED by Adele Griffin

All You Never Wanted
Adele Griffin

Rating: D
Release Date: 10/9/12
Synopsis:
With my eyes closed and Alex's core friends all around me, it was like I'd become my big sister, or something just as good. And so who cared if they were calling it Alex's party? One thing I knew: it would be remembered as mine.

Alex has it all—brains, beauty, popularity, and a dangerously hot boyfriend. Her little sister Thea wants it all, and she's stepped up her game to get it. Even if it means spinning the truth to win the attention she deserves. Even if it means uncovering a shocking secret her older sister never wanted to share. Even if it means crying wolf.

Told in the alternating voices of Alex and Thea, Adele Griffin's mesmerizing new novel is the story of a sibling rivalry on speed.

My thoughts on the book:

I may have enjoyed this novel more if I had actually been able to stomach any of the characters. As it stands, I finished this simply to see how it ended, but I didn't enjoy it. The writing wasn't bad, which is why I rated this with a D instead of an F. I just didn't enjoy the subject matter or the characters at all. I thought this would be different than it was. Fans of depressing contemporary will probably love this. I, however, did not.

One of my complaints with these characters is the binary aspect of it. Thea is an intelligent character who is more comfortable with a book than a group of people. However, as she discovers her sister's life, she wants to steal it from her basically. It's disgusting, if you ask me. Of course no one asked me, so I guess that doesn't matter. But since it's my blog, it's kind of like I'm being asked, so I'm telling. Alex is a bit whiny and over dramatic, in my opinion. I didn't like her much either, and I certainly didn't buy her love for Xander.

The plot was different, but I just didn't like it. I don't like lies and jealousy and the like to the degree that they're exhibited here. I don't like them at all, but at least in books they normally make for a good story. Not in this case. Thea just did one crappy thing after another, and I kind of hated her a lot.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this story to people who don't like reading from a brat's perspective. Or in this case, two brats' perspectives.
