Happy Friendship Day from the Throne of Glass Ambassadors!

When reading Throne of Glass, I can't help but be touched by all of the friendships in the novel. Dorian and Chaol, Nehemia and Celaena, and of course Fleetfoot and everyone. Dorian is more selfish than Chaol, but he doesn't mean to be. He still makes sacrifices for his best friend, and I am sure that he would die for Chaol, if it came down to it. Chaol, on the other hand, sacrifices everything, including his chance at true love, for Dorian. It's clear that he loves Dorian like a brother.

Nehemia and Celaena haven't been friends nearly as long as Dorian and Chaol, but they, too have a special bond. When they meet and discover that they can speak the same language, they become friends instantly. While they don't always work toward the exact same goals, and while their personalities are very different, they still love and support each other. Nehemia is a social activist, and she wants to save her people, and the world, from oppressive colonialists. Conversely, Celaena is more concerned with looking out for herself and those she loves. She tends to ignore what is going on in the world around her because her survival instinct is so strong. Nehemia is softer, though just as strong as Celaena, and while Celaena is harsher than Nehemia, she, too, is vulnerable. These two show extremes are never good, but they somehow manage to balance each other out. Also, even though they are different, they still understand each other.

Fleetfoot, Celaena's dog, who is friends with everyone reminds me a lot of my cat. He is a rescued baby, and I've had him for ten years. He was abused prior to his rescue, and it took a long time to build his confidence and trust. Now he introduces himself to company and purrs and cuddles with everyone he meets. Fleetfoot wasn't abused, thankfully, but she does befriend pretty much everyone she meets. If you're kind to Celaena, then you're a friend to Fleetfoot. I love how animals embrace people who are kind.

While all of these friendships remind me of my friendship with my best friend of ten years, Dawn, the one I can relate the most to is the friendship between Nehemia and Celaena. I moved to Chicago when I was twenty-one years old, and not long after I arrived, I met Dawn at a concert that we were both photographing for our online music zines. We became friends instantly, just like Nehemia and Celaena. We have understand each other perfectly and pretty much finish each other's sentences. We also have a great sense of humor, though most people don't get our jokes. That's fine. We think we're funny. Like Celaena and Nehemia, we often seem to speak a language that those around us don't understand.

Dawn is quiet and reserved until you get to know her. She's also polite and laid back. She's a kind and wonderful person, and she worries about the state of the world. She's tall and thin, too. Obviously, she reminds me a lot of Nehemia. I, on the other hand, am short and feisty. I'm kind of like those small dogs that think they're bigger than they are, a lot of the time... though I don't wet myself when I'm scared. I'm outspoken and a bit rough around the edges. I used to be a lot more defensive than I am now, but I still protect myself and those I care about above all else, no matter what. Like Celaena, I've spent the majority of my life focused on just surviving. I never really concerned myself with LIVING. Obviously I've never worked as an assassin, though. Dawn has also never been a princess, but shh... don't tell her that, haha.

Throughout the course of our friendship, Dawn has taught me to open up more and to be a kinder person. Kindness does not equal weakness. She's always been there for me when I needed her, and no matter how bratty I get, she never hates me for it. She also isn't afraid to put me in my place when I get out of hand. As I've evolved over the past ten years, I've calmed down a lot. I've reigned my temper in, and I'm not so quick to assume the worst of people. I'm not quite laid back, like Dawn is, but I'm definitely more "level" and patient. I hope she's also gotten some good things out of our friendship.

So, happy friendship day, Dawny! I love you!

A DARKNESS STRANGE AND LOVELY by Susan Dennard

A Darkness Strange and Lovely
Susan Dennard

Rating: A-
Synopsis:
Following an all-out battle with the walking Dead, the Spirit Hunters have fled Philadelphia, leaving Eleanor alone to cope with the devastating aftermath...

With her brother dead and her mother insane, Eleanor Fitt is alone. Even the Spirit-Hunters—Joseph, Jie, and the handsome Daniel—have fled to Paris. So when Eleanor hears the vicious barking of hounds and see haunting yellow eyes, she fears that the Dead, and the necromancer Marcus, are after her.

To escape, Eleanor boards a steamer bound for France. There she meets Oliver, a young man who claims to have known her brother. But Oliver harbors a dangerous secret involving necromancy and black magic that entices Eleanor beyond words. If she can resist him, she’ll be fine. But when she arrives in Paris, she finds that the Dead have taken over, and there’s a whole new evil lurking. And she is forced to make a deadly decision that will go against everything the Spirit-Hunters stand for.

In Paris, there’s a price for this darkness strange and lovely, and it may have Eleanor paying with her life.

My thoughts on the book:
A Darkness Strange and Lovely is an intriguing follow-up to Something Strange and Deadly. Dennard continues Eleanor's story, and complicates her life even further. This novel does not suffer from "second book syndrome," and I was engaged throughout the entire story. With rich world-building, an intriguing plot, and captivating characters, this is sure to be one of the summer's hottest reads.

The characterization in this novel is top-notch. Eleanor annoyed me some in this installment, even though she is still a strong and interesting heroine. I don't like how she insists on keeping secrets from people, and she never seems to learn from her mistakes regarding that. Hopefully she'll improve in this department in the third book. Also, she keeps whining that no one will teach her anything, but she avoids the people who could teach her something. It makes no sense. Other than those two things, she is still extremely likable and surprisingly strong, considering the time period. I wish we could have seen more of Daniel, and I'm hopeful that the next book will focus on him quite a bit. I absolutely adored the new addition to the team, Oliver. He's extremely entertaining and well-developed. I can't wait to get to know him better.

The plot is intriguing and mysterious, though I figured out the bad guy pretty early on. However, there were a few things thrown in there that surprised me. Also, Dennard includes a couple of red herrings to keep the reader on his/her toes. The pacing is pretty much perfect, and the descriptions are well-written. I could picture Victorian Paris, and I felt like I was there. Dennard's writing is lovely, and I enjoyed the awkward tension between Eleanor and Daniel. The ending sets the stage for the third installment, but ties up most of the problems in this novel quite nicely.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good Steam Punk novels. The zombie twist, along with Dennard's unique characters, make this series stand out from the other Steam Punk books. Give this series, and this book, a try. You won't be sorry.

I left everything I knew behind.
But it was worth it. He was worth it.
No one thought an ordinary girl like me would last two minutes living with the Amish, not even me. There are a lot more rules and a lot less freedom, and I miss my family and the life I once had. Worst of all, Noah and I aren’t even allowed to see each other. Not until I’ve proven myself.
If I can find a way to make it work, we’ll be NOAH & ROSE  together forever.
But not everybody believes this is where I belong.

WARD AGAINST DEATH by Melanie Card

Ward Against Death
Melanie Card

Rating: B+
Synopsis:
Twenty-year-old Ward de’Ath expected this to be a simple job—bring a nobleman’s daughter back from the dead for fifteen minutes, let her family say good-bye, and launch his fledgling career as a necromancer. Goddess knows he can’t be a surgeon—the Quayestri already branded him a criminal for trying—so bringing people back from the dead it is.

But when Ward wakes the beautiful Celia Carlyle, he gets more than he bargained for. Insistent that she’s been murdered, Celia begs Ward to keep her alive and help her find justice. By the time she drags him out her bedroom window and into the sewers, Ward can’t bring himself to break his damned physician’s Oath and desert her.

However, nothing is as it seems—including Celia. One second, she’s treating Ward like sewage, the next she’s kissing him. And for a nobleman’s daughter, she sure has a lot of enemies. If he could just convince his heart to give up on the infuriating beauty, he might get out of this alive…

My thoughts on the book:
Ward Against Death was a pleasant surprise for me. I went into this novel not expecting a lot, to be honest. The ratings on Good Reads aren't that flattering, but I decided I'd give it a try anyway. So I sampled it from Amazon and ended up downloading the entire novel. I'm glad that I did. This book is a fun and refreshing take on necromancers. The characters are unique and the plot is intriguing. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

Ward is an entertaining and endearing hero. He is a bit clumsy and not that tough, but he is highly intelligent. He has a good heart, and even though he's socially awkward, he still manages to make an impression on Celia. I really liked the fact that he's not some perfect, brooding, dark leading man. It was a nice change to have a flawed and charmingly awkward character for the hero. Celia is a bad ass, and sometimes I didn't like her. However, she is strong, and overall, I was rooting for her. The more I got to know her, the more I liked her. For both Ward and Celia (the story is told in alternating third person limited POVs), I felt like Card could have given us more to go on so that we got to know them better. I still enjoyed reading about them, though.

The world-building is a bit lacking (I never got a completely clear view of the society), but the explanations that are given are woven throughout the story instead of given to the reader in info dumps, and I liked that. The pacing is pretty spot on, and I was hooked from the beginning. When a story starts with someone raising the dead, you know things will get more interesting from there. The plot itself is intriguing, and the bad guys are really, really bad and kind of horrifying. The writing style is more YA than Adult, but since I enjoy YA, that didn't bother me. There were times that I thought I was reading a YA novel instead of a New Adult story. The romance is lacking a bit, but thankfully there is no insta-love. It seems as if Card is building Ward and Celia's relationship on friendship, and I like that. The ending ties up a lot of loose ends, but leaves enough questions unanswered for the sequel, which I'm looking forward to.

Overall, I'd recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a good New Adult Paranormal novel. The characters are endearing, the plot is unique, and the story is just a lot of fun. Give Ward Against Death a try. You won't be sorry.
