Top Ten Tuesday #6

Hey everybody! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and Bookish. This week, I'll be listing my top ten reading goals for 2013.

  1. 1. Read a wider variety of genres - I mainly read YA supernatural/paranormal/dystopian, with a few contemporaries and adult urban fantasies thrown in. I need to expand my mind and my reading this year.
  2. Read over 200 books - I slacked last year, toward the end, because of grad applications. I have a lot of catching up to do this year!
  3. Read a book of poetry - I really don't appreciate poetry like I should... unless it's Edgar Allen Poe.
  4. Read one work of classical literature
  5. Read more books by indigenous authors in order to broaden my perspectives about the politics of indigeneity
  6. Read 5 or more books by male authors - I have a tendency to be sexist when it comes to author choices... not good
  7. Read at least one book by an African American author - when I say this, I don't mean that I never read books by African American authors... I mean that I never read books discussing the difficulties faced by African American people from their own perspectives. I would like to gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties African Americans face in contemporary society. I don't know nearly enough about this, and I feel badly about that.
  8. Read at least one book that's been translated into English - last year I read Sapphire Blue, which was translated from German into English. This year, I hope to read Emerald Green, at the very least. Maybe another one as well. Again, I want to gain different perspectives on life this year.
  9. Read one biography - I hope Mike Ness's biography will be out this year because I'm dying to get my hands on that.
  10. Read 5 or more self-published works - because of the horrific drama surrounding reviewing unpublished authors, I tend to shy away from them. I'm going to research which authors won't bully me if I don't like their work and give them a chance. I'm sure I'll find some very talented writers by doing this.
What are your top 10 reading goals of 2013?

  2. Great goals! I want to read 200 books this year. I never read poetry and I really struggle to read nonfiction. Maybe I should work on some biographies. http://wp.me/pzUn5-1lM

  3. Wow, 200?? That would be so hard for me to do! I'm aiming for over 130 this year (which is how much I read in 2012). Great goals :)
